DOT-Rated Brake and Clutch Fluids

DOT 4 brake fluid in 5 litre packs is the standard workshop format for scheduled brake fluid changes, and it is the size most service departments order against a monthly schedule. Britannia holds 38 brake and clutch fluid lines in 250ml, 500ml, 1-litre, 5-litre and 20-litre packs.

The range covers DOT 4, DOT 4 LV for vehicles with ESP and stability systems, and DOT 5.1 where a higher boiling point is specified. Brands stocked include Castrol, Motul, Wolf, febi, Mobil, Liqui Moly, TotalEnergies and Syntol.

Getting the rating right

  • DOT 4 — the standard glycol-ether fluid for most passenger and commercial vehicles
  • DOT 4 LV — low viscosity, specified where ESP and ABS actuation demands it
  • DOT 5.1 — higher dry and wet boiling points for heavier duty cycles

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which is why the wet boiling point rather than the dry figure governs the service interval, and why part-used containers should not be carried over between jobs. Sealed 1-litre and 5-litre packs are usually the more economical format for that reason.

Workshops ordering a full service line can add from engine oils and coolants and antifreeze.
